Byse Fellowships

Each year, Harvard Law School offers between two and four Byse Fellowships  for students in the S.J.D. program. These Fellowships, named in honor of Byrne Professor of Law Emeritus Clark Byse, are intended to help fund the dissertation work of students who have completed their oral examinations. Fellows are expected to teach a one-semester Graduate Program workshop of their own design and to be in residence for the entire year of their appointment.

Byse Fellows are selected for one-year terms on both a calendar year and academic year basis. Applicants are asked to submit, among other materials, a detailed proposal for their planned workshop and a revised dissertation prospectus. Selection criteria will include the specificity, feasibility, and general interest of the proposed workshop, and the applicant's general academic achievement.
