Practical Tips on Making a Lateral Move for Partners
Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:00am ET
With Katy von Mehren, Founder, von Mehren Legal Search
If you are a partner thinking about making a lateral move, there is much to consider.
This webinar will address the process of making a lateral move as a partner. It is a companion piece to the earlier "Practical Tips" webinar which was focused on associate moves. We will look at reasons firms hire lateral partners and reasons why partners move from one firm to another. We will dig into the process, talk about documents you may be asked for during your search as well as what types of information you should be looking for when you consider moving laterally to a new firm.
The presenter has worked both sides of the fence, as a law firm recruiter and a headhunter, and is uniquely positioned to educate and give practical advice on this subject.
Katy von Mehren founded von Mehren Legal Search in 2013 after spending three decades working as a law firm recruiter. Her career started in New York as Assistant to the Legal Personnel Administrator with Davis Polk and Wardwell followed by three years as Coordinator of Legal Recruitment Programs and Legal Personnel Administrator at Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander & Ferdon. In 1987 Katy moved to Boston and joined Palmer & Dodge where she was the Director of Legal Recruiting for nineteen years. During her tenure there, she established the recruiting department and led all aspects of attorney and technology specialist hiring. She was a member of the Associate Evaluation, Diversity and Conflicts Committees. In 2006, Katy moved to Ropes & Gray to be the National Director of Legal Recruiting. Two years later Katy was recruited to join Mintz Levin as Director of Partner Recruiting to grow the firm through lateral partner recruitment.
She is an active member of NALP (National Association for Law Placement), was a liaison to the Boston Area City Group and served as Regional Coordinator for the Northeast Region. She is a past president of the Massachusetts Legal Recruitment Association (MALRA) and a current member of The National Association of Legal Search Consultants (NALSC). Considered an expert in her field, she is a frequent speaker at NALP Conferences on subjects ranging from recruiting to integration.
