VII. Written Work Registration Deadlines

A. Registration for Option 1 of the J.D. Written Work Requirement 

1. The Option 1 registration and proposal forms with the faculty supervisor’s signature must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by the following dates:

  • Third-year students:
    Fall term: October 2, 2009
    Spring term: January 29, 2010
  • Second-year students:
    Fall term: October 2, 2009
    Spring term: March 1, 2010
  • First-year students:
    Spring term: March 1, 2010 (permission from the Vice Dean for Academic Programming required for registration.)

2. Students should submit the required Option 1 registration and proposal forms to the proposed faculty supervisor for approval well in advance of these deadlines as faculty members may require additional preliminary work before accepting a proposal.  

B. Registration for Option 2 of the J.D. Written Work Requirement 

The Option 2 registration form with the appropriate signatures must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by the following dates:

  • Third-year students:  December 1, 2009.
  • First- and second-year students: contact the Office of the Registrar.

C. Mandatory Registration for the J.D. Written Work Requirement.

Third-year students who fail to register for Option 1 by January 29, 2010 or for Option 2 by December 1, 2009 may be removed from the May 2010 degree list.

D. Registration for the LL.M. Written Work Requirement

(Note: Students should seek approval well in advance of the dates below, as faculty members may require additional preliminary work before accepting a proposal.)

  1. LL.M. student deadline for submitting a faculty-approved registration proposal to the Graduate Program Office for LL.M. Long Papers, LL.M. Theses, and fall term 25-Page Papers: October 2, 2009.
  2. Deadline for submitting faculty-approved registration proposal to the Graduate Program Office for spring term 25-Page Papers: January 29, 2010.
  3. Final deadline for all LL.M. written work registration: January 29, 2010. LL.M. students who fail to register for the LL.M. Written Work Requirement by January 29, 2010 may be removed from the May 2010 degree list.
  4. LL.M. deadline for approval of additional credit (applicable only to students writing the 25-Page Paper):  March 26, 2010.

E. Registration for the Winter Term Writing Program

1. Registration deadline for J.D. students: November 6, 2009

2. Application deadlines for LL.M. students:

  • Applications available from Graduate Program Office: late October 2009 (after students have registered for the LL.M. Written Work Requirement)
  • Application deadline: November 6, 2009
  • Applicants notified of results: early December 2009

F. Registration for Optional Written Work 

With the exception of J.D. Optional Written Work done during the Winter Term Writing Program, the registration deadline for which is listed above, students should file the required Optional Written Work registration form, signed by the Law School faculty supervisor, by the deadlines listed below. J.D. students should file the completed form with the Office of the Registrar, and LL.M. students should file the completed form with the Graduate Program Office by:

  • Fall term: October 2, 2009
  • Spring term: January 29, 2010

G. Additional Credit for J.D. Written Work

J.D. students who have approval for additional credit for a paper for which they have already registered should notify the Office of the Registrar by:

  • Fall term: November 6, 2009
  • Spring term: March 1, 2010

All written work registration forms are available at the Office of the Registrar, Pound 300.
