Spring Reunion 2009

Classes of 1959, 1969, 1974, 1984, and 1999

April 23-26 was a spectacular spring weekend in Cambridge.  Students flocked to Kumble Plaza preparing for final classes and exams. Those not studying were involved in a serious game of volleyball on Jarvis Field. The Class of 2009 posted flyers throughout campus to call attention to Class Day and Commencement, June 3 and 4. Their speaker this year: Elena Kagan '86, newly appointed Solicitor General and former Dean of Harvard Law School.

It was a picture perfect setting for 600 alumni and friends as the classes of 1959, 1969, 1974, 1984, and 1999 gathered to renew friendships, share stories, and reconnect with the Law School while they celebrated anniversary reunions.  Harold Hope '99, President of the Harvard Law School Association, and Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs & Co., presided over the Spring Meeting of the Harvard Law School Association held in conjunction with reunions.

The economy was much on people’s minds.  The remarks of Jim Cramer ’84, host of CNBC’s Mad Money and Co-Founder of The Street.com and the remarks of John Coates, John F. Cogan, Jr. Professor of Law and Economics, were timely and much appreciated.  In Celebration of Harvard Law School’s first President since Rutherford B. Hayes, a moderated panel discussion, led by Charles Ogletree '78, Jesse Climenko Professor of Law and Director, of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, was held.  The topic:  Forecasting President Obama’s Impact on America’s Political and Economic Agenda.  A distinguished panel of alumni debated the issues.  We pondered the Future of the Internet with Jonathan Zittrain '95, Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society and learned more about the International Face of Harvard Law School as William Alford '77, Henry L. Stimson Professor of Law, Vice Dean for the Graduate Program and International Legal Studies, and Director of East Asian Legal Studies and John F. Cogan, Jr. '52, Of Counsel, Wilmer Hale LLP, Deputy Chairman, Pioneer Global Asset Management S.p.A. (Italy), and President, Pioneer Family of Mutual Funds (U.S.A.), discussed with students and alumni the School’s growing global impact.  Finally, Acting Dean Howell Jackson ’82 briefed alumni on the state of the School and answered questions on curriculum, finances, and much more.

As always, the social and cultural program cemented the weekend with a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  Cocktail receptions were held for alumni of the International Law Journal celebrating their 50th Anniversary, and the Harvard Defenders. Reunion attendees enjoyed Class Dinners at the Charles Hotel on Saturday evening and a lovely farewell Sunday Brunch at the Harvard Faculty Club

Reunions are a great way to renew friendships and network with others who share your profession and interests.  It is also a good time to listen, discuss, and share opinions about important issues and events that affect us all.  If you were with us, Bravo! We know you had a wonderful weekend.   If you had to miss this reunion, please be sure you join us for your next gathering.  It is not the same without you.
