On-Campus Fitness Centers

Harvard University maintains a number of recreation and fitness centers for students and other affiliates. These include the newly-renovated Hemenway Gymnasium on the law school campus and the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) located one block off of John F. Kennedy Street between South and Winthrop Streets. Access to these and other Harvard facilities is free for law school students with the exception of fees for use of courts, special classes, etc. Athletic memberships can also be purchased relatively inexpensively for spouses, domestic partners, and children. Visit the Athletics Department membership site for more information:

There are also several fitness centers in the law school area. Location and contact information are listed below. Rates are subject to change and special offers are often available, so please contact these facilities individually for current rates. Be sure to mention that you are a current student. These facilities are not affiliated with Harvard University in any way. Please make yourself aware of membership policies and read your membership contract carefully before joining these facilities.

Swimming Pools

Harvard University Athletics has two swimming pools, the Blodgett Pool and the Malkin Pool, that are open to anyone with a Harvard athletic membership. The Blodgett Pool is located on the corner of North Harvard Street and Soldiers Field Road near the Harvard Stadium. The Malkin Athletic Center is located one block off of John F. Kennedy Street between South and Winthrop Streets. Hours for these pools vary, but a current schedule is always available on the aquatics site:

There are also public pools in the law school area. Both of the facilities listed here are run by schools and may have different hours or be closed on school holidays, vacation weeks, and over the summer.

The War Memorial Swimming Pool is located in the Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School at 1640 Cambridge St. in Cambridge. Cost of swimming is $3 per visit for Cambridge residents and $3.50 for non-residents. Community access hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5:30 - 9:00 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday 5:30 - 6:45 p.m.; Saturday 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.; Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The John F. Kennedy Elementary School Pool is located at 5 Cherry St. in Somerville. Cost of swimming is $3 per visit for Somerville residents and $4 for non-residents ($1 extra for early morning hours). Community access hours for lap swim are Monday – Friday 6:15 - 7:45 a.m.; Monday – Thursday 7:00 - 8:45 p.m.; Saturday 12:00 - 3:45 p.m.

Tennis and Squash Courts

The Beren Tennis Center has 18 outdoor tennis courts, 2 with stadium seating.

The Murr Athletic Center has 6 indoor tennis courts and 16 international-sized squash courts.

New Tennis and Squash Clinics and Classes are also available.

Additional Tennis and Squash Facility information is also available.

Because the Athletic department is a part of FAS, undergraduates, GSAS students and Extension School students can use these courts free of charge as long as they do not reserve a court. If they would like to reserve a court, they need to pay court fees, which range from $18 to $26 an hour for indoor tennis courts and $8 to $12 an hour for squash courts.

For all other Harvard students, staff and faculty, including law school students, court fees must be paid whenever the courts are used. There is also a $50 seasonal membership fee or a $10 per use guest fee. These fees do not apply to the Hemenway squash courts. The Law School covers the cost of the use of the Murr and Palmer Dixon squash courts for Law School students, so using your Law School ID will enable free use of those courts.

A great resource for questions about any of these racquet facilities is Jake Olkkola, the Assistant Manager of Recreational Facilities (617-495-4790, olkkola@fas)

Student Sports Organizations and Clubs

At the law school, there are a number of student organizations devoted to sports and recreation. Currently, these include men’s and women’s crew, soccer, softball, squash, surfing, target shooting and tennis clubs. If you are interested in joining one of these groups or in starting a new student organization, contact the Dean of Students Office at 617-495-1880 for more information.
