International Law Workshop
Ryan Goodman and Andrew Woods
Spring 2008
Mondays 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Pound 201
Scholarly writing regarding international law has changed enormously in recent years and appears likely to continue to do so, especially as it becomes increasingly interdisciplinary. This workshop will use human rights as a window onto broader changes in international legal thought, and will self-consciously consider how recent developments in other disciplines might inform that scholarship. The seminar provides students with the opportunity to enmesh themselves in this scholarly transformation by bringing to the class a cross-section of leading scholars from various disciplinary perspectives to focus on the theme of human rights. The invited speakers will draw from diverse research areas such as social networks theory, social marketing, social psychology, and political science. Each speaker will assign readings for her session (which may be drawn from the work of the speaker or other writers). Students in the class will be required to submit short "reflection papers" commenting on the work to be presented. Each session will begin with opening remarks by the speaker, followed by questions posed to the speaker by the instructors. For the rest of the class period, discussion will be open to the floor with ample opportunity for students to pose questions to the speaker.
