Reserve Collections

The Law Library's Reserve collection is comprised of hard copies of both permanent reserves (approximately 600 titles) and course reserves. The Library makes widely used material accessible to the entire Harvard Law School community including some course textbooks, topical nutshells, most recent copies of popular journals, some videos and DVD's and bound volumes of past HLS exams. For more recent exams, check the Annual Examination Book Archives.

The PERMANENT RESERVE collection is located behind the Langdell Circulation desk and can be searched using the Reserves tab in the HOLLIS Catalog and selecting “Reserves-All Terms .” Students can borrow these permanent reserve materials by asking for them at the Langdell Circulation Desk under the author's last name.

The COURSE RESERVE collection is held separately from the permanent reserve collection.  Students can borrow course reserve materials by asking for them at the Langdell Circulation Desk under the author's last name.  Course reading lists are maintained in and can be viewed from course websites using the Reserves List Tool.

Reserve material can be borrowed for two hours and can be renewed up to 5 times, in person, if no other patron is waiting for the item. Reserve items can be checked out overnight during the last borrowing period of the night and are due back one hour after the library opens on the following day.

Fines for Overdue Reserve Items:

Reserve items are typically in high demand, and the fine for returning them late is $1.00 per hour for every hour the item is overdue, with a maximum of $28.00.

Instructions for faculty submission of materials or lists of materials for Course Reserves are located in the Faculty Services section. Please contact Mike Barker, Circulation Supervisor, at 495-8689 or mbarker@law.harvard.edu with all questions or concerns relating to reserves.
