More Information On Course Reserves

Course Reserves Guidelines

The following items may be placed on course reserve:

  • Law School Library Materials: All Harvard Law School Library print materials may be placed on reserve except case reporters, periodicals, loose-leaf materials, and materials from the Reference collection. If the Law School Library does not own the item, and it is considered a necessary part of coursework, items may be considered for purchase by the Library.
  • Personal Copies of Books, Journals, or Other Media: Faculty may place personal copies of books, textbooks, videos, or periodicals on course reserve; however, the Library cannot guarantee the safety of these items (either by loss or mutilation).
  • Course syllabi, Lecture Notes, Exams, Readings: Faculty may place copies of their course syllabus, lecture notes, exams/answers or other course readings on reserve. However, we strongly encourage that these items instead be placed on course websites in electronic format for more convenient student access. If you are in need of scanning services for this purpose, please contact Ashley Pierce, 617-495-4565.

The following items may not be placed on course reserve:

  • Materials owned by other Harvard libraries
  • Interlibrary loan materials
  • Case reporters
  • Reference books
  • Bound journals or single issues of periodicals
  • Microfilm
  • Looseleaf materials

Please Note:

  • It is best to submit course reserve requests several weeks before the beginning of each semester. Lists are processed in order by date of receipt.
  • Please keep in mind that all items will not be immediately available for use in the reserves collection. It may take several weeks to receive books that must be ordered or recalled from patrons. For items readily available in the collection, please allow 3-5 working days processing time during peak reserve season.
  • Materials may be added throughout the semester.
  • At the end of the semester, materials will automatically be removed from course reserve. Library items will return to the collection and personal copies will be returned to the instructor's delivery address or discarded. A new request must be submitted each time a course is offered.
