On October 15, a new book on executive pay and corporate governance by HLS Professor Lucian Bebchuk and Jesse Fried, Harvard Law School class of 1993, will be the focus of symposium at Columbia Law School. In Pay Without Performance: The Unfulfilled Promise of Executive Compensation, Bebchuk and Fried argue that compensation arrangements are seriously flawed, as are the governance systems that have produced them, and that reforms are necessary in the relationship between boards and shareholders.
"The problems of executive compensation, and the underlying problems of corporate governance, have not yet been adequately addressed," said Bebchuk. "I hope that the symposium will contribute to the recognition and understanding of these problems."
Speakers in this symposium will assess the critique of executive compensation practices and governance that Bebchuk and Fried present. The symposium will feature presentations by leading academics, investors, executives, advisers and members of the media, including Glenn Hubbard of Columbia Business School, former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt, Vanguard Group founder John Bogle, former TIAA-CREF CEO John Biggs, and Ira Kay, national director of compensation consulting for Watson Wyatt.
