Anand Swaminathan '06 received the Andrew L. Kaufman Pro Bono Service Award for performing the highest number of pro bono service hours in the Class of 2006. The award is named for Professor Andy Kaufman who was a leader in supporting HLS's Pro Bono Service Program.
In his three years of law school, Swaminathan performed a total of 2,310 hours. His volunteer service included work with both the Harvard Defenders to represent indigent clients and with the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau to represent clients facing eviction proceedings. He also did research and advocacy for immigrant victims of domestic violence and organized against proposed anti-immigrant federal legislation.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Nisha Agarwal '06 and Jose Rodriguez '06 for their dedication and commitment to pro bono work.
Collectively, the Class of 2006 performed almost 240,000 hours of pro bono legal work in student organizations, summer public interest jobs, clinical work and other volunteer legal placements. Fifty-three students performed over 1,000 hours.
